The earliest version of the Swan Maiden Tale is found in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa (10th-7th centuries B.C.) but the story spread throughout the world only after being used by both the Lokottarava^din and Sarvāstivādin schools of Hīnayāna Buddhism.
While the frontier poems of the Zhongyuan people favored descriptions of winterscapes, poetry from the Dunhuang region favored spring, with a unique frontier literary style. By collating works in this category, we were able to gain an impression of Dunhuang through the eyes of indigenous people in that era.
